Now you know all of Scrum—albeit only to a somewhat shallow level. We’re just getting started. The patterns that follow take you beyond the what of Scrum into its whys. We wanted to start you off gently with this chapter to help you understand the big picture of Scrum if you are new to Scrum, and to make it clear that your success with Scrum depends as much on how these patterns inform your insight and experience as it does on fully “doing Scrum.” There are no Scrum police. But the patterns capture broad experience with a strong track record, and while no one will keep score of how many patterns you use, our ambition and hope is that the patterns' history and the persuasion of their rationale should give you confidence to use them. The key is to get the whole team to self-organize, to take charge together, and to move forward together.
The next two chapters build on what you know so far, both through the patterns we have introduced here and by introducing additional patterns that add texture and refinement to this foundation. In particular, the next chapter, Product Organization Pattern Language talks about you as a person, and your colleagues, and how you come together in different settings and groups to take work forward. Take your time to browse the patterns and to follow the links from one to another. Reflect on how they touch on your own past experiences, and look for them within yourself. If one speaks to you, tailor it to your organization and get your team to try it. Now your exploration starts: do great things, and enjoy the journey!
